CBS 3 (Philadelphia), "SUV dangers include 'frontovers'"
A CBS 3 investigation found a driving danger that has killed dozens of children. You think you are doing everything right to protect your family, but Investigative Reporter Jim Osman shows how a New Jersey couple, who also thought they had their two-year old son safeguarded, ended up planning his funeral.
You've probably heard about so called "back-overs," SUV's and their drivers killing children they couldn't see behind them. But there is a new problem, seeing what is right in front of you.
Jeb Bartow had told his son to stay behind his SUV as he moved it forward. "I moved about three to four feet and felt a bump," said Bartow. "I knew at that moment that Tegan somehow got in front of the vehicle." The accident crushed the boy's skull. Barlow didn't see his boy over the hood of his SUV and accidentally killed his own son. This phenomenonn is called a "front-over." The real life heart breaking examples keep piling up, like 20-month old Tiffany Quick of Mesa, Arizona or 17-month old Isiaha Spencer of Lincoln, Nebraska. Both died instantly when SUV drivers could not see the children in front of their cars. It only takes seconds for a child to get into that front blind spot on an SUV. To be clear, "front-overs" are not common with any specific model of SUV, just larger SUVs in general. Because there are no safety features to keep this from happening, the best advice is to simply walk around your car once before getting in and starting the engine.
