Times & Democrat (South Carolina), "10-year-old
girl dies in collision" |
Authorities say a 10-year-old Tennessee girl
was wearing her seat belt, but died Tuesday after being ejected onto
Interstate 26 from a van traveling to Georgia for a softball tournament.
Alexis James of Knoxville died at the scene of a one-car crash at the
120 mile marker, according to Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth. "(Investigators)
think that they had an extreme blowout," Porth said. "At some
point, she was ejected."
South Carolina Highway Patrol spokesman Lance Corp. Bob Beres said the
crash occurred at about 12:40 p.m. when the 1994 Dodge van left the eastbound
road. "The tread separated from the tire, causing the driver to lose
control of the vehicle," Beres said. "It caused him to run off
the roadway, causing the vehicle to flip, ejecting the 10-year-old child
onto the frontage road." The driver of the van, Bradford Shoaf, 50,
of Greer, S.C., and three other passengers were taken by ambulance to Lexington
Memorial Hospital where they are believed to have been treated for non
life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe the girl was wearing her seat belt at the time of
the crash. Somehow the girl slipped out of the seat belt," Beres said. "Unfortunately,
incidents like this do happen. But they're rare." No other vehicles
are believed to have been involved in the crash. |
