Tire Failures Cause Car and SUV Rollover Accidents |
| As a direct result of manufacturing or design defects, certain models of
tires, have a tendency to under go belt-leaving-belt tread separations. These
tire tread separations can lead to tire blow outs or the loss of air from the
tire. This drastically reduces the ability of a driver to control a vehicle. |
| This is particularly true when the failure happens to the rear wheel of
a vehicle and especially at a high rate of speed such as those reached on a highway.
In the case of many of the tires recalled, especially with Bridgestone/Firestone's
Wilderness and ATX models, extremely hot weather conditions and under-inflation
can further reduce the safety of these faulty tires. |
| When the tread and belt separate from the body of a tire, the driver often
hears a loud thumping noise just as the vehicle goes out of control. The events
following a tire failure occur so rapidly and unexpectedly that it is virtually
impossible for even the best drivers to avoid accidents in high-speed situations.
In many cases involving tire failure and SUVs, this can lead to devastating rollover
accidents, as in the case of many reported incidents with Firestone
tires and
Ford vehicles. |
| In addition, many of the defective tires included
in these tire tread recalls came as standard equipment on many SUV vehicles.
For example, Firestone’s
Wilderness AT tires were standard with Ford Explorers in 2000 and Firestone Wilderness
LE tires were used as original equipment on model year 2000 Yukon XL 1500 series
vehicles and offered as optional equipment on the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban 1500
series vehicles. |
