Tire Safety Tips

To prevent the devastating loss of life that can occur as a result of tire failures, there are steps that can be taken in addition to ensuring that recalled tires are not being used.
EARLY SIGNS: There are many early warning signs to watch out for. If you notice any of the following signs, please have a professional inspection performed and correct those issues.
  • cracks or cuts in the sidewalls
  • bulges or blisters in the sidewalls
  • uneven treadwear
  • excessive vibration
  • worn out tread below 1/16th on an inch (You can use a tread-wear gauge or simply use a penny to gauge this by inserting a president Lincoln penny headfirst into the tire groove. If the top of his head is visible, the tire is too worn and needs to be replaced.)
MAINTENANCE: Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires can slowly lose air pressure through the rubber and through seasonal temperature changes. Under-inflated tires cause the sidewalls of tires to flex, compromising the car’s handling ability. Small pressure losses of as little as 4 psi can make a difference. If a sidewall flexes too much, this can create extreme heat in the tire and lead to tread separation or a blowout. Check your tire pressure each month with an inexpensive tire gauge and set the pressure to your car manufacturers recommended settings.
